Recognising when to assist in the calving of a cow is an important factor in the management of calving. Being able to examine and assist in the calving of the cow in a clean, safe environment is critical for the cow, the calf, and the staff. The cow can then be examined to establish the need for assistance and whether the attendance of a vet is needed. This Farming Note sets out some of the common reasons for the cow to require assistance at calving and highlights the need to recognise when a vet is necessary for a successful outcome to the calving. |
